Not a matter of right or wrong. It's dealing with the logistics of creating a successful show that is appealing. Books watchers are the minority, unfortunately. If the show was done like the books, you would need too much background information and clarification throughout the series for it to make sense.

This scope covers NO story elements of ASOIAF or "Game of Thrones" or pre-AGOT history like "House of the Dragon" or Fire and Blood, per Rule 3.3. Any discussion of the story of the books or the shows must use an appropriate spoiler tag such as (Spoilers Main) or (Spoilers Published).

In general, what do you think about the screen adaptation vs. George R. R. Martin's original written works?

Game of Thrones attempts to be the Walking Dead not Breaking Bad (although Breaking Bad had much narrower focus so it was easier to pull it off). The books are superior in absolutely every aspect. The shows writers are doing a poor job way too often and the general outline - which is the show's storyline which gets divided into episodes on

Game of Thrones, on the other hand, takes all those tropes and turns them on their head. Good people get their heads chopped off and evil people win. Power corrupts. Family will betray you. It's a very nuanced, much more human approach to fantasy, painted in shades of gray. So they're both worth reading--it just depends what you're in the mood for. Joffrey reads Sansa's distress and desire to return as an opportunity to play gallant. The ruby ford is the site where his father famously won his throne. Joffrey, tipsy, is eager to "play knights" and defend the damsel in distress. All they need is a villain. Joffrey draws his sword, live steel he never gets to use.
But if I had to choose: better in the books (more flesh out, complex) - Jon, Arya, Brienne, Sansa. -better in the show - Cersei & Tywin. They gave more personality to Margery. Unresolved case: both Cat&Tyrion are more likeable in the show but more complex in the books.
Catelyn Stark, TV vs Book. I've watched the first season of a Game of Thrones and decided to listen to the first book on audiotape while i biked to and from work. Does anyone else feel that Catelyn comes across WAY more bitchy and mean in the book than shes does on the TV show. I remember feeling really sympathetic towards Catelyn watching the In the show, everyone knows not to trust Littlefinger. He is known as a schemer who’ll use any chance to stab you in the back. There are also some scenes with him where his actions do not make any sense. He performs random acts with no apparent motive. In the books, these characters are the real players of the game of thrones.

• Game of Thrones Ruined Me! So I know I’m late but I just watched all 8 seasons of GOT in a little less than a month…I don’t say this lightly..GOT fucked tv shows up for me. Obviously seasons 7/8 weren’t the best but the show…it’s the best ever.

I’ll just hit some of the big points because listing all the differences is border-line impossible. •Jon is a way better character in the books. He’s smarter, more ruthless, and more pragmatic than his show counterpart (particularly in the last couple of seasons). He’s basically Ned 2.0 in the best way possible. When I read this passage a couple years ago, I was shocked. But the show took it too another level. That bloodcurdling scream made the brutality of Oberyn's death much more impactful. My heart was racing throughout the entire fight, and my stomach sunk lower than any other moment in the show or books thus far when Oberyn's skull got turned to mush.

In the words of George R R Martin, the books are the books, the show is the show. (Shows, now, I guess) The books are a considerable undertaking, I shit you not. 5000 pages in 5 of 7 planned volumes (a lot of people are also skeptical that both a) grrm will not finish the books and) that the story can be concluded in just 2 more volumes).

The book Snakes are almost to a woman never present during events at all, spending almost the whole story locked in a tower. We don’t get any of their cool fighting prowess or even any interesting dialogue from them, all of which (one bad line notwithstanding) the show does. The Dorne storyline in the books is entirely carried by Doran and
